Telangana tunnel collapse: No communication with those trapped

A major accident has occurred in Telangana, which has been widely discussed since yesterday because eight workers are still trapped due to a tunnel collapse.

As you can see in the news, "Telangana Tunnel Collapse: Rescue Efforts Intensified to Save 8 Trapped Workers." Through this video, we will try to understand where exactly this incident happened, how the collapse occurred, and what is currently happening. Rescuing the trapped workers has become extremely difficult due to the distance at which they are stuck and the overall situation inside the tunnel, which is quite concerning.

First, let me tell you about the location. As you can see, this is a map of Telangana. If you look towards the southern side, you will find Hyderabad, the capital. Below that, there is Nagarkurnool district. In this district, a river flows, which divides Andhra Pradesh and Telangana—this is the Krishna River. On this river, you will find the Srisailam Dam.

Looking at the map, you can see the Krishna River flowing towards the Bay of Bengal. Nearby, there is an ongoing canal construction project. The government aimed to transport water from the Srisailam Dam to another location, which is why this tunnel was being constructed. The specific canal being built here is called the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC). Since it is located on the left-hand side of the dam, it is referred to as the Left Bank Canal. The purpose of this canal was to supply water to the Nalgonda district.

However, the recent discussions about the tunnel collapse indicate that the incident took place near Amrabad in Telangana. This tunnel, which was under construction, is approximately 44 km long. The collapse is reported to have occurred in this area. The construction had been ongoing for the past five years but was halted for some time. It resumed just four or five days ago, and soon after, this unfortunate accident occurred.

During the collapse, around 50 workers were inside the tunnel for repair and construction work. When the tunnel started collapsing, most workers managed to escape, but eight of them remained trapped inside. Among the trapped workers, four are from Jharkhand, two from Uttar Pradesh, one from Jammu and Kashmir, and one from Punjab.

The collapse created about 10 meters of debris and around 200 meters of mud spread across the tunnel, making the rescue operation extremely challenging. The incident happened around 14 km inside the tunnel, making it very difficult to access and rescue the workers.

According to Telangana’s irrigation minister, the collapse was likely caused by water leakage inside the tunnel. The construction site is located in a mountainous region, and water seepage from above had been observed. Initially, the leakage was slow, but it gradually increased to about 8 meters. The workers were trying to pump out the water, but suddenly, the tunnel collapsed.

There were two tunnel boring machines (TBMs) working on the construction—one from each end. Around 20 km of the tunnel had already been dug from one side, and approximately 14 km from the other. The middle section, which was around 9.2 km, was the most problematic area due to excessive seepage, leading to water accumulation. A boring machine was deployed there to remove the water, but that’s where the accident happened, trapping the workers inside.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy regarding the incident and assured full support from the central government. As the situation is critical, the Indian Army has been mobilized to assist in the rescue efforts. The Army’s engineering regiment and medical teams have been put on standby to provide necessary support, including high-capacity pumps and other rescue equipment.

One of the main challenges in the rescue operation is the water accumulation inside the tunnel. Until the water is pumped out, rescuers cannot proceed further. Currently, two high-power pumps of 170 horsepower each have been deployed to remove the water. Once the water level is reduced, the rescue operation can progress further.
