Former U.S. President Donald Trump has introduced the "American Gold Card," which essentially allows wealthy individuals to obtain U.S. citizenship by investing $5 million (approximately ₹43 crore) in the U.S. economy. This move is seen as a strategy to reduce America's massive national debt, which currently stands at $36 trillion.
Trump's plan aims to attract millionaires worldwide, particularly from India and China, where many wealthy individuals seek to migrate for better economic stability, cleaner environments, and stronger currencies. The scheme replaces the existing EB-5 visa program, which granted U.S. residency for a lower investment of around $1 million.
While the program could generate trillions for the U.S. economy, it may negatively impact India and China as wealthy individuals leave these countries. However, the high cost may make it less attractive compared to similar residency programs in the UAE and several European countries, which offer permanent residency at a lower investment.
Overall, the initiative is a strategic financial move for the U.S. but poses challenges for other nations losing their wealthy citizens.
