Why Have the USA and Putin Changed Their Stance?
The USA and Russia were once at odds, but suddenly, their sentiments seem to have shifted. Why? Because the enemy has changed. Former President Trump believes that China's growing influence is the biggest challenge for the USA. If the USA wants to counter China effectively, it must consolidate its resources, which are currently scattered across various global conflicts.
For example, Trump has indicated a desire to reduce involvement in conflicts like the Israel-Gaza situation and instead focus on the South China Sea, where the USA wants to counter China's growing dominance.
During discussions, India was also questioned about its role in global conflicts. Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated that India is a land of peace (Buddha) and not war. He emphasized that India can play a significant role in establishing peace in regions affected by conflict.
The Importance of Energy
Energy is a crucial factor in India-USA relations. India is a major consumer of fossil fuels, including crude oil. The USA has proposed investing in India's nuclear energy sector to boost clean energy production.
Moreover, the USA wants India to purchase oil and gas from its reserves. The US economy is heavily dependent on two key industries—oil and defense (weapons). The USA sees India as a major potential buyer, given that India imports 85% of its crude oil. The goal is for the USA to become India's leading energy supplier.
The Role of the USA in India's Defense Sector
The US is also looking to strengthen defense ties with India. The USA has previously tried to persuade India to buy its defense equipment instead of purchasing from Russia. For example, when India decided to buy the Russian S-400 air defense system, the USA insisted that India should opt for American alternatives.
Now, the USA has offered India its top-tier fighter jets, including the F-35 stealth fighters, to deepen their defense collaboration. The aim is to increase US military sales to India and strengthen strategic partnerships.
Counterterrorism & Justice
The USA and India have also reached an understanding on counterterrorism. Previously, the USA had treated terrorist attacks in India, especially in Jammu and Kashmir, as internal law and order issues. However, during discussions, both nations agreed to take stronger counterterrorism measures.
A significant step in this direction is the USA's decision to extradite Tahawwur Rana, one of the key planners behind the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, to India for trial. This move is seen as a step toward justice.
Deep State & Influence in Bangladesh
Another major geopolitical issue is the USA's alleged involvement in Bangladesh’s internal affairs. Accusations have surfaced that the USA has tried to influence the Bangladeshi government through indirect means—funding journalists, NGOs, and student activists to push its agenda.
A key point of contention is St. Martin's Island, a strategically important location. According to Bangladesh's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the USA wanted control over the island, and when Bangladesh refused, various political disturbances followed.
When asked about the USA’s role in Bangladesh, Trump deferred the question to PM Modi, indirectly acknowledging that past US administrations may have played a role in these events.
Economic & Strategic Goals
Ultimately, the USA's primary objective is to strengthen its economic and strategic position by maintaining strong ties with India. The US wants access to India's large market and aims to sell oil, gas, and defense equipment to India.
While these deals may seem beneficial for India, they also serve American interests, ensuring economic gains and strategic leverage. The USA is not offering favors—it is conducting business.
